Materials:

Hook D/E sizes 8 or 10 LS and 10 or 12 SS

Silk Black

Body Baby Wool in colours of white, red, lime green or orange

Notes:

While this pattern is a quick lure to dress, the method of tying is a little unusual and may cause some problems initially. It is most important to use the right kind of nylon wool, and ‘Sirdar’ brand baby wool was found to be the best, hence the lures name. When tied with this wool, it stands out like a neon sign in the water.

Method:

  1. First of all well varnish the hook shank.
  2. Cut off about 9 inches of wool. This should be laid along the top of the shank as a loop and long single strand facing the eye, leaving an inch long single strand and a loop of similar length projecting for the tail.
  3. Lay a ¼ inch foundation of black tying silk from the eye and back.
  4. Then secure the loop and long single strand of wool with black tying silk at the eye, lift the wool and take the silk down to the bend of the hook.
  5. Now tie in the other loop and short single strand of wool.
  6. Next take the long single strand of baby wool from the eye and rap this around the hook shank to the bend to build up a body and secure.
  7. Take the tying silk back through the turns of wool to the eye.
  8. Pull the long single strand back over the shank, tightly, and tie in at the eye. Cut off any wool projecting over the eye, and then build up a large head with the tying silk.
  9. Finally cut the short strand and tail loop to about ½ an inch. Then with a needle shred the three strands and cut into a bushy fish-tail shape and varnish the head.
