The Black Zulu

Materials:
Hook:
D/E sizes 10 or 14
Silk: Black
Tag: Bright Red Wool
Rib: Flat Silver Tinsel
Body: Black Seal’s Fur, Wool or Ostrich Herl
Hackle: Black Cock. A Hen hackle may be used for patterns to be fished to represent any of the aquatic beetles.
N.B. To make the pattern extra buoyant for fishing on the bob, I usually tie in an extra black cock hackle behind the eye. It may also be of interest to note that the original dressing specified black silk for the body and a black hackle with a touch of green in it.
Method:
- A short tag of bright red wool is tied in at the bend, followed by flat silver tinsel, which is left hanging to be wound over the body and hackle later.
- The body of black seal’s fur or wool should then be applied thickening towards the shoulder or eye of the hook. Personally I prefer black ostrich herl.
- Finally a black cock hackle of the appropriate size should be tied behind the eye and wound palmer fashion down the body to the bend. The hackle is held in position by the silver tinsel which is now ribbed back over it to the eye where a whip finish with the tying silk completes. The hackle should be wound fairly sparsely, and care should be taken when ribbing not to trap too many of the fibres.
